Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Alexopoulos’ current work focuses on the “effectiveness” of conventional and novel therapies when offered in community settings and on the dissemination of evidence-based practices. Dr. Alexopoulos is also the principle investigator on a NIMH-funded Intervention Center for Geriatric Mood Disorders – one of only three in the United States.
His research has been guided by the hypothesis that geriatric depression is a heterogeneous entity that includes patients in whom aging-related processes and neurological brain diseases modify the course of illness and the effects of treatment.
His research findings are expected to guide geriatric antidepressant treatment practice and provide the background for sharply focused investigations of the mechanisms of specific geriatric depressive syndromes.
